The opportunity and responsibility remain ours. Cite this article: Tom Manning. How long halt ye between two opinions? Skip to main content.
The Latest. A team of evolutionary scientists from the U. If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him. Elijah came near to all the people and said, How long will you halt and limp between two opinions?
If the Lord is God, follow Him! But if Baal, then follow him. And the people did not answer him a word. And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal, follow him. If the Lord is God, follow God. If Baal is God, follow Baal.
If the Lord is God, worship him! But if Baal is God, worship him! Then Elijah drew near to all the people, and said, How long do ye halt between two opinions? And Elias coming to all the people, said: How long do you halt between two sides?
How long will you keep jumping from one side to the other? If the Lord is the true God, follow him. But if Baal is the true God, then follow him!
If Baal is God, follow him. Their self-respect gets in the way. And so, they design their own gospel, or they search for another Church that has another gospel where they have a Jesus who paid for the sins of everyone in the whole world, and now it is up to me to make a decision for Jesus.
That leaves my self-respect intact. John says: No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him. The Lord Jesus was going to the Cross to pay for the sins of those people who were given to Him by the Father. He did that almost years ago. He did not go to the Cross for everyone in the whole world. What a pitiful Savior he would be if that was so. There would be people going to Hell for whom Christ died.
What a terrible injustice that would be. But then people point to 1st John , which seems to say that the Lord Jesus paid for the sins of everyone in the world. But when you examine the Greek text of that verse you arrive at a different conclusion.
We will talk about that in another sermon. If the Lord Jesus paid for all the sins of every person in the whole world, then everyone will be saved and nobody goes to Hell, because all their sins have already been paid in full. If the Lord Jesus paid for some of the sins of every person in the world, then no one will be saved, because everyone will have to burn off in Hell one or more of their sins.
If the Lord Jesus paid for all the sins of some persons in the world, then some will be saved, because all their sins have already been paid in full. Clearly, only point number 3 can be the true Gospel. And then this would mean that the Bible teaches Predestination! This would mean that the God of the Bible is a totally different God than anyone could imagine! And that is exactly right. God says:. Isaiah For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
This God of the Bible is not like Baal. This God of the Bible is far more glorious and far more merciful than anyone can imagine. And this people ought to know better.
This people have heard the True Gospel sometime, somewhere. Elijah says: Your outward life must declare the inward purposes of the heart. Follow Him! Who should they be following? That is tragic. The people of those days should bring up the interest is knowing the Word of God. Their salvation depends on it. We can also say that God did not inspire them to study the Word of God. They simply had no interest. But just like today, people have no interest in studying the Bible, and that is tragic.
Since we are approaching the end of time we can see that God the Holy Spirit is not very active in instigating people to study their Bibles. The Bibles stay on the shelves. God is addressing the Church, and God says: not only are you going to be destroyed for lack of knowledge of the Bible, but I will also forget your children. And that is tragic.
When God addresses individuals, He speaks like He does in:. When we are drawn to Jesus, we not only come to Him but we are drawn irresistibly to follow Him. It means that not only our salvation, but also our sanctification is in the hands of our sovereign God. Pray to God that He grant us the Grace to be drawn to Jesus, and that our children also be drawn to Him, and that He keeps drawing us.
And what we see here in this story is the terrible condition of people who do not know the Word of God. They do not know what God said.
They have not read their Bibles. They may not even know where in their house is a Bible. And so, they may not come to a conclusion. They do not know whose opinion they should follow. Here is Alfred Chompff claiming that speaking in tongues is a Satanic phenomenon. People do not know. But it is a decision between Heaven and Hell. It is actually not important what people say.
What matters is what God says. God voices His opinion in the Middle Verse of the Bible. Some obsessive compulsive individual counted all the verses in the Bible and then he determined what the Middle Verse is. The Middle Verse is Jeremiah And this is what God says:. This verse tells us: If we follow Alfred Chompff, or if we follow Greg Laurie, or if we follow Chuck Smith, we are all under the curse. What curse is this?
It is the curse of being unsaved, for we follow the opinion of a man. Our only hope of salvation is if we follow what God says. How can we know what God says?
We must study our Bibles. There are no shortcuts. We may listen to our preachers, but we are obligated to check them out to see if they are speaking the truth. And this is woefully lacking in our present society. No one seems to be willing to search the Bible to find where the truth really is. One the one hand you are afraid that you will lose something that is precious and seems important in this world.
You are ashamed to have people think you are concerned for your soul. You are ashamed to come out of the world, and openly declare your faith in Christ. You are afraid of what someone might say.
You are waiting to see if someone else will come out for Christ. Because you are ashamed of Christ! That is why you will not come over to Him. You know that your life will soon be over and gone forever — that you must die and go to the judgment.
You know that the Spirit of God will not always strive with you — that your day of grace is limited — that soon God will give you over to a reprobate mind. At times these thoughts alarm you. Is that not so? How long will you risk losing your soul? How long will you play with eternal realities? Your indecision is what makes your case so alarming. You are on the road to perdition — it is the path that all the wicked have walked on, who went to Hell before you.
They went on, halting between two opinions, and giving themselves false comfort, until they slipped and fell into Hell fire. And are you not following their steps? You must choose. God requires your whole heart. If He does not have your heart, He will not have you at all. You are required to confess and forsake your sins — to come out of the world — and away from the false professors in the church — to take up the cross and follow Christ as Simon of Cyrene did. If you halt at this, you will never find salvation.
If you halt at this, Christ will have nothing to do with you! He will be ashamed of you at the judgment. But this will never succeed. By compromising you may obtain a false hope, but you will not secure salvation. God will despise all that you do. The path to Heaven is too narrow.
Do you fear the reproach of your lost friends? Are you so weak, and so timid? What is the mockery of lost friends compared with the fiery breath of the Almighty?
I exhort you to halt no longer. Life and death are now set before you. But remember, that your youth will soon fade. When your life ends you will fall into the grave, and your soul will fall into the hands of an angry God. Hymers' sermons each week on the Internet at www.
