The coup was unsuccessful as the plotters only killed Gen.

Murtala Muhammed, while Obasanjo and Gen. Theophilus Danjuma escaped death. Danjuma was the chief of army staff and de facto number three man in the country at the time. Obasanjo and Danjuma then established a chain of command and gained control of the system.
